Weather, bargains make SoCal so good

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Is there ever a bad time for golf in San Diego?

It’s a rhetorical question, of course, with a resounding answer of NO!

California’s southernmost major city has it all: brilliant weather (average June high temp: 70F), spectacular sea-to-mountains scenery, and a collection of courses to rival any destination in North America.

The bargains aren’t bad, either. TeeTimes.net features discounted rates at 23 facilities in the San Diego area; here are a few of the best deals going.

La Costa Resort & Spa

La Costa Resort & Spa

La Costa Resort & Spa exudes class and history, having hosted big events including the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions (now the season-opening SBS Championship). The resort’s North and South courses, both designed by Dick Wilson, are beautiful and occasionally brutish, but easily worth the $100-plus fees. Right now, you can play La Costa at rates discounted by nearly 50%.

Arrowood Golf Course

Arrowood Golf Course

Architect Ted Robinson, Jr., whose famous father created many of the West Coast’s most beloved layouts, did his old man proud at Arrowood Golf Course. Set in the gorgeous highlands north of the city, Arrowood delights the senses while presenting subtle challenges to golfers of all abilities. The course’s finishing kick is considered among the area’s best by Southland Golf magazine. June tee times can be had for up to 41% off regular rates.

The Golf Club of California at Fallbrook, formerly a private club, is now open to the public and under new management. The course is a stunner — great views, top-notch conditioning and challenges galore. Denizens of TeeTimes.net have posted raves, calling the Golf Club of California at Fallbrook “fantastic,” “excellent” and “not to miss.” June tee times can be had for 20% below rack rates.

PGA WEST Golf Courses, La Quinta

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

We’ve recently added a few new Palm Springs Golf Courses to our network (well La Quinta to be precise). These are the 3 great PGA West Tracks: the Nicklaus Tournament Course, the TPC Stadium Golf Course, and the Greg Norman Course. There are some great rates for these golf courses, often described as the “best golf in Palm Springs.”

Here are a few details about each:

PGA WEST – Nicklaus Tournament Course

No golf course designer can quite capture the same combination of challenge, beauty, and drama as Jack Nicklaus. His bold strokes are laid out on a scenic desert canvas known as the PGA WEST Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course. Every hole on this demanding course requires its own unique strategy; especially the 561 yard, par 5 15th, which culminates with a shallow and well-bunkered island green. It is only fitting that a round on the Tournament Course should end with a dramatic water-crossing shot to the signature 9th and 18th double green.

PGA WEST – TPC Stadium Golf Course

There may be no greater challenge in the game of golf than the PGA WEST TPC Stadium Golf Course, designed by Pete Dye and ranked in The 100 Greatest Courses in the U.S. by Golf Magazine. Revered for its brash beauty and intriguing design, nine of the holes have water very much in play, and almost every hole displays Pete Dye`s tremendous bunkering. This is especially true on the 16th, a 571 yard, par 5, where the massive green side bunker, complete with stairs, sits 18 feet below the level of the green. It`s no wonder the TPC Stadium Golf Course has been the site of so many high-profile events, including The Skins Game, The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, and the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

PGA WEST – Greg Norman Golf Course

This newest course at PGA WEST designed by Greg Norman lies in a seabed 40-feet below sea level surrounded by an immense crescent of terra-cotta mountains. The course teems with purple, white and yellow wildflowers, while the mix of tall and short native grasses produce different shades of green running almost to silver. The grass covers just 60 acres of tight fairways that taper toward the greens with nine ponds covering 18 acres. The demands of this course are a challenge for players of all levels.

Tee Times for Arizona Grand Golf Course

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I’ve been looking at a few trips south in the coming weeks: first Mexico in March, then Arizona in April. That got me to reviewing and researching a few golf courses in phoenix.  A golf course booking for the Arizona Grand Golf Course led me to investigate a little further.

Tee Times for the Arizona Grand Golf Course (par 71, 6300 yards) are presently listed at $83.59 for a morning tee time on TeeTimes.net. This is a savings of 35% off the regular rates

Todd, a reviewer on our site, recently gave them a 4-star rating and wrote:

All in all, a fantastic course. I really like how they did the first hole because the tee box is in the center of the club house and bar. Puts a little pressure on that tee shot. The Par three 18th is an amazing hole, but not how I like to end a round. The 2 short Par 4s are drivable by an avg golfer if you cut the corner.

Apparently Todd’s reviews are very similar to Golf Digest who also gave the Arizona Grand Golf Course a 4-star rating.

Golf in Palm Springs – Tahquitz Creek Tee Times

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The Taqhuitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs has two golf courses for your golfing pleasure. There is the Tahquitz Creek Resort Course and the Tahquitz Creek Legend Course. Both are great golf courses that should be considered while golfing in Palm Springs.

The Taquitz Creek Resort Course (6500 yards) is located just minutes from downtown Palm Springs and is described as the “Pride of Palm Springs”. A recent Palm Springs golfer posted a review on our TeeTimes.net site that reads:

“This course weaves between some classic Palm Springs mid century architecture. The course shoots one stroke harder than its younger sister The Resort Course. Lots of out of bounds and well placed traps keep your play honest and present challenges for all levels of players. If your game is in the tank the views of the area are well worth the price of green fees. Always a good value and a short drive from The City of Palm Springs one of the best value courses in the area.”

The Tahquitz Creek Legend Course (originally the Palm Springs Municipal) was designed by William Bell in the late 50′s, providing Palm Springs golfers with the quintessential Palm Springs golf experience. The Tahquitz Creek Legend Course provides a traditional layout with tree lined fairways and undulating greens. This 6,600 yard course features 40 challenging bunkers and memorable mountain views.

At the time of this posting, your tee time for the Tahquitz Creek Legend Course could be found for $75 while the Taquitz Creek Resort Course had tee times listed on our network at $99 per golf round.

Going to Palm Springs? Why don’t you play both Taquitz courses and send us your thoughts.

Cascata Golf Club in Las Vegas – Is $400/round worth it?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I was reviewing some golf course bookings over the weekend, and I found a golf reservation for Cascata Golf Club in Las Vegas. I was a little sticker shocked at the price — only $400 per round. While we appreciated the booking and we were glad we could help someone book their golf trip to Las Vegas, I am dying to know from those that have golfed at Cascata in the past… is it worth it?

The pictures look great. The reviews are out of this world. The opportunity… perhaps once in a lifetime for the everyday golfer. Is it worth it? Book your tee time at Cascata, and drop me a line.

Cascata Golf Club, Las Vegas

Cascata Golf Club, Las Vegas

Curious as to what the most expensive golf course in the world is? I was. The most expensive golf course that I could find was the Shadow Creek Golf Course which also is in Vegas (Shadow Creek is not on our network… yet). Pebble Beach in California (also not in our network… yet) comes in second at $475 per round.

TPC Scottsdale Stadium Golf Course, Scottsdale AZ

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Every now and then it is fun to pretend that you are a world-class golfer. 18 holes at the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Golf Course in Scottsdale AZ gives you this experience.

The TPC Scottsdale is a PGA TOUR Facility, and Home of the FBR Open (Formerly Phoenix Open) and features tournament conditions all year long. The golf course allows you to try and duplicate Tiger Wood`s hole-in-one from the 1997 Open, called “the shot heard around the world”.

Recently, one of our golfers wrote:

“[the TPC Scottsdale has a] fabulous layout and a real jewel amongst the Scottsdale offerings. PGA venue always in top shape. Great clubhouse and pro shop and fantastic restaurant. Should be on every visitor and local’s list. Not too far out and just a pleasure to tee it up where the pros do. Superb staff adds just the right amount of attentive service. A great day of golf – don’t miss it.”

Go ahead, book your tee time for the TPC Scottsdale Stadium golf course today.
